Global brands often face the challenge of creating resonant campaigns across diverse markets while maintaining brand identity. Mondelēz International's Oreo brand is addressing this by partnering with the music phenomenon BTS for its newest campaign. This collaboration also underscores the growing impact of Korean popular culture on global marketing strategies.
The partnership aligns Oreo with BTS, leveraging the group's millions of dedicated followers known as ARMY. A significant 75% of young fans are more inclined to support brands that actively engage with their fandoms, according to research. The campaign features Limited Edition Oreo & BTS cookies, which were available for presale on June 1 and will be at retailers starting June 8, while supplies last.
Matt Foley, Vice President of Oreo at Mondelēz International, stated the collaboration stems from a genuine connection, as BTS members grew up eating Oreos in Korea. The campaign emphasizes shared experiences and cultural authenticity to resonate across its rollout in over 80 countries. A key feature is the unique brown sugar pancake flavor, inspired by the Korean snack hotteok.
BTS actively participated in the co-creation process, influencing the flavor, custom embossments, and packaging design. This involvement aims to enhance authenticity among fans. The package design reflects Korean street market energy, with cookie embossments including member names and a special hidden message. A QR code invites fans to create a digital love letter to BTS for a chance to win prizes.
This initiative reinforces Oreo's positioning of shared passion and playfulness, connecting the BTS ARMY with Oreo fans. Foley noted the universal language of music, fandom, and shared joy. Success will be measured by fan interaction with digital spaces and product engagement, aiming to foster loyalty and repeat customers.
