Oprah Winfrey Show's Most Shocking & Inspiring Moments

The Oprah Winfrey Show, which concluded its 25-season run on May 25, 2011, is remembered for numerous impactful moments. Winfrey herself has reflected on personal regrets, such as her 1988 liquid diet stunt where she showcased 67 lbs. of fat, later admitting it promoted an unsustainable message.

Among the show's most successful initiatives were Oprah's Favorite Things and Oprah's Angel Network. Launched in September 1996, Oprah's Book Club became a cultural phenomenon, hand-picking books for discussion and launching authors to bestseller status.

The show also provided platforms for significant public conversations. In April 1997, Ellen DeGeneres appeared to discuss her sexuality, an interview that generated considerable controversy and hate mail for Winfrey. Another deeply moving segment featured 11-year-old Mattie Stepanek in October 2001, whose courage inspired millions and led to a lasting bond with President Jimmy Carter.

Spectacular giveaways became a hallmark, most notably the September 13, 2004, episode where every audience member received a new Pontiac G6. Pop culture history was also made on May 23, 2005, when Tom Cruise famously jumped on Winfrey's couch declaring his love for Katie Holmes.

The show faced controversy again in September 2005 with James Frey's memoir, A Million Little Pieces. Winfrey confronted Frey on air in January 2006 about fabricated details, later inviting him back for an apology in May 2011.

In September 2009, Whitney Houston gave a candid two-part interview discussing addiction and her tumultuous relationship with Bobby Brown. The show's grand finale featured a star-studded farewell special in Chicago with performances and appearances by numerous celebrities.
