In a recent reunion, former One Tree Hill co-stars James Lafferty and Chad Michael Murray reflect on their memorable hair transformations during the show's run. Lafferty, who played the role of Nathan Scott, had to undergo a dramatic makeover for a specific storyline in season 5, where his character was mourning the loss of his NBA career.
"I had this big, long lion's mane, and then they took the hair that they had cut from my head and they cut it into little tiny pieces and they pasted it with glue onto my face every day for several episodes," Lafferty recalls, describing the extensive process behind his shaggy look. He admits the entire ordeal was "so itchy" due to the summer heat.
Meanwhile, Murray, who portrayed Nathan's half-brother Lucas Scott, went through numerous hair transformations, from a short buzzcut to a choppy in-between style and even bleaching his hair platinum blond. The actor acknowledges there was "a lot of cringe" in his character's hair choices, as he was trying to find his true self.
"I think there's a lot of finding yourself, you know, and when you get down to the truth of it, I just had no idea who I was," Murray reflects. "I thought I was something that I wasn't and I wanted to be this guy. And so, you're trying to do all these different things to be something, when really at the end of the day, just be you."
Both actors agree that their hair journeys on the show mirrored the personal growth and self-discovery of their characters, ultimately leading them to embrace their authentic selves.
