The Odia Society of the United Kingdom (OSUK) recently convened in Manchester for a two-day event that celebrated the fusion of Odia and Punjabi cultures. This gathering showcased a dynamic diaspora identity, with younger generations actively engaging with their regional heritage while contributing to an Indo-British cultural landscape.
A significant part of the convention was the presentation 'Puri to Punjab,' which delved into the historical and spiritual ties between Odisha and Sikhism. This segment narrated Guru Nanak Dev's journey to Puri, linking the spiritual significance of the city with Sikh history and the establishment of the Khalsa Panth.
The event featured a rich tapestry of artistic expressions, including Odissi, Kathak, Bharatanatyam, Giddha, Bhangra, Bollywood, and Sambalpuri dances. Musical performances spanned Hindustani and Carnatic traditions, complemented by instrumental pieces and dramatic presentations.
Attendees were also engaged by the drama 'Salabega' and an Odissi performance by Praanjol Nanda. The Punjabi culture was represented through spirited Giddha and Bhangra performances. The OSUK journal, Kalinga Kesari, was also presented.
Additionally, the convention included a special segment acknowledging individuals and clinicians involved in cancer care. A moment of silence was observed for victims of the Nepal floods. Dignitaries present included India's Consul-General in Manchester, Vishakha Yaduvanshi.
