Curry Barker's horror feature, 'Obsession,' made its SXSW debut tonight following its initial screening at TIFF. The film underwent edits, notably reducing its goriest scene by removing several head smashes to avoid an NC-17 rating. Director Barker expressed initial reluctance but ultimately adjusted the scene, noting the film still maintains its intense and hardcore feel.
Focus Features secured the film after its TIFF showing in a deal reportedly worth over $15 million. Written and directed by Barker, 'Obsession' tells the story of a man who makes a wish on a mysterious willow tree to win his crush's affection. His wish is granted, but he soon discovers the perilous and sinister price associated with his desires.
Barker, known for viral short films like 'Milk & Serial,' discussed his fascination with studying human behavior, which he believes lends itself to both comedy and horror. The film's cast includes Michael Johnston, Inde Navarrette, and Andy Richter, with production handled by Teashop Productions, Under the Shell, and Capstone Pictures.
