The Oasis Leisure Centre in Swindon, Wiltshire, has remained abandoned for five years, succumbing to neglect and decay since October 2020. Owner Seven Capital cited the pandemic as the reason for its closure, deeming the site unviable. Campaigners from 'Save Oasis Swindon' have highlighted the deteriorating condition of the grade II listed building, questioning the lack of maintenance and action from both Seven Capital and Swindon Borough Council.
Discussions between Seven Capital and the local council regarding the site's future are ongoing. A draft agreement revealed that the centre's reopening is contingent on Seven Capital fulfilling financial obligations for local infrastructure improvements, including bus service enhancements and cycle route upgrades. Official permission for partial demolition and new construction has been granted.
While plans for partial demolition and rebuilding have been approved, including the removal of the sports hall, the council refused permission for 700 flats. Seven Capital has indicated a commitment to revitalizing the site for community benefit, with the council leader affirming its refurbishment as a priority.
