19 Mar
Summary
- Bali's international airport and all transport cease for Nyepi.
- The Balinese New Year, Nyepi, is a day of silence and reflection.
- Festivities include purification, demonic effigy parades, and fasting.

Bali's Ngurah Rai International Airport and all island transportation cease annually for Nyepi, the Balinese New Year. Observed from March 19th to March 20th, 2026, this day is dedicated to contemplative silence and spiritual renewal.
The observance strictly adheres to four precepts: Amati Geni (prohibiting fire and light), Amati Karya (barring physical activity), Amati Lelunganan (prohibiting travel), and Amati Lelanguan (fasting and no revelry).
Nyepi is the culmination of a three-stage celebration. It begins with Melasti, a purification ritual, followed by the Bhuta Yajna ceremony and the Ogoh-ogoh parade a day prior, featuring large effigies to dispel negativity.
The day following Nyepi, Ngembak Geni, marks a joyful return to social gatherings and community religious practices, contrasting sharply with the preceding day of stillness.
