Mayor Zohran Mamdani of New York City made a notable decision to forgo the 2026 Met Gala. Instead of attending the annual fundraising event, Mamdani chose to dedicate the first Monday in May to celebrating the vast workforce integral to the fashion industry.
He articulated that the fashion world relies on the dedication of countless individuals, such as seamstresses, tailors, retail employees, and delivery drivers. Mamdani's office amplified this message by showcasing the stories and achievements of six industry professionals on social media. Among them was Hafeez Raza, who learned tailoring at age 10 and now owns a Brooklyn shop. Christopher Anderson, now the master tailor at Saks Fifth Avenue, began his journey at 13 and also serves as a union shop steward.
