An audio drama, "UnderGround Zero: 9/11 & The Mob," has debuted today, recounting the lesser-known story of the New York Mafia's illicit financial gains following the 9/11 attacks. The series features actors Michael Imperioli and Steve Schirripa, both veterans of "The Sopranos," alongside Ray Abruzzo and Arthur Nascarella.
Produced by Thoroughbred Studios and Goldhawk Productions, the drama is written by Stephen Kronish and is based on factual events. It explores how, within hours of the Twin Towers falling, while first responders battled the chaos, some men saw a nefarious opportunity to profit from the tragedy.
This scheme, which aimed for even greater illicit success, was ultimately curtailed by the persistent efforts of one committed police officer. Michael Imperioli, who also produces, noted the story's resonance as a New Yorker and highlighted themes of family, loyalty, and survival within the crime narrative.
