Jean Davidson, the Executive Director of the National Symphony Orchestra, has resigned from her position at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. She cited the "toxic situation" and increasing politicization of the venue as reasons for her departure. Davidson will be moving to Los Angeles to assume the role of Executive Director and Chief Executive of the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts, effective May 4.
Davidson expressed weariness over the "Trump Kennedy Center" label and a perceived lack of communication from the new board installed by the Donald Trump administration. She stated that discovering significant news, such as the center's planned two-year renovation and closure, through the press made it difficult to be effective. The NSO is now reportedly seeking alternative venues for its performances, facing strains due to the short notice.
Davidson, who previously served in leadership roles in Los Angeles, including at the Music Center, aims to collaborate with the team at The Wallis to develop a shared vision. Meanwhile, the Kennedy Center is slated for a $200 million renovation, with plans announced to rename the "Kennedy Center Honors" to "The Trump Kennedy Center Honors," a move that has faced legal challenges.
