The Royal and Derngate theatre has cultivated original theatrical productions for nearly two decades, fostering "extraordinary ideas that will have a future life," according to Artistic Director Jesse Jones. The 'Made In Northampton' series, running since 2009, is designed to highlight the diverse voices within the town.
This initiative has seen considerable success, with several productions transferring to London's West End and even New York's Broadway. Notably, 'The Worst Witch' and 'Touching the Void' were performed in the West End, while 'The Season' and 'End of the Rainbow' also made successful transitions to London and subsequently Broadway.
The theatre's latest offering, 'Once Upon a Time in Sokoto', delves into the formation of modern Nigeria, aiming to connect with the local west African population. The venue is recognized as an "excellent case in point" for its ability to blend local relevance with international triumph.
