Deal, the Kent seaside town, is celebrating one of its own, comedy legend Sir Norman Wisdom. An exhibition dedicated to his life has opened at The Kent Museum Of The Moving Image (MOMI).
The exhibition showcases a variety of items, including photographs, newspaper clippings, and playbills. A map highlighting significant locations in Deal connected to Wisdom is also on display. Much of the collection originates from the private archive of his nephew, Peter Wisdom.
Sir Norman Wisdom, born in London in 1915, experienced poverty during his childhood, which significantly influenced his iconic underdog comedic persona. Despite running away to pursue fame at 14, he maintained strong ties to Deal throughout his life.
His nephew, Peter Wisdom, shared anecdotes of Sir Norman's humorous nature, recalling instances where his uncle's antics amused people even in serious situations. The exhibition also touches upon Wisdom's early interest in entertainment, sparked by witnessing a film shoot in Deal as a teenager.
Personal memorabilia, such as a letter practicing his autograph and his army kit bag, are also part of the display. These items offer a deeper look into the life of the beloved actor, comedian, and musician, who was knighted in 2000 for his contributions to the entertainment industry.
