Filmmaker Christopher Nolan recently presented the inaugural Keighley award to Patricia Keighley, honoring her late husband David Keighley. Nolan described Keighley as his Imax mentor and a vital collaborator who enabled his ambition to shoot Hollywood movies on Imax film. David Keighley, who passed away last year after a battle with cancer, was Imax's first chief quality officer and oversaw post-production on over 500 films.
Nolan emphasized David Keighley's crucial role in rallying filmmakers to advocate for shooting on film, a movement that successfully countered Kodak's initial discussions with studios about phasing out film stock. This effort ensured that filmmakers had a voice in preserving the art of shooting on film.
In addition to the Keighley tribute, the event recognized other industry talents. Cinematographer Autumn Durald Arkapaw received the Lumière Award for her contributions, with praise for her camera team and director Ryan Coogler. Director Joachim Trier was honored with the Auteur Award for his critically acclaimed and artistically consistent body of work, having shot five of his six features on film.
The ceremony also celebrated Kristen Stewart's directorial debut, 'The Chronology of Water,' with the Debut Feature Award. Salomon Ligthelm received the Music & Commercial Film Director Award, and the series 'Fallout,' filmed on film, was named Television Series of the Year.
