Nintendo Revives Animal Crossing with Switch 2 Edition and Free Update

In a surprise announcement, Nintendo has revealed plans to revive its hit game Animal Crossing: New Horizons with a Nintendo Switch 2 Edition and a free update for both the Switch 2 and original Switch versions. The Switch 2 Edition, launching on January 15, 2026, will feature enhanced resolution, mouse controls using the Joy-Con 2 controller, and expanded online play capabilities.

Alongside the Switch 2 Edition, Nintendo is also rolling out a free update for all Animal Crossing: New Horizons players, regardless of which console they own. This update will introduce a new resort hotel, additional amiibo functionality, collaboration items, and updates to the online play experience.

The original Animal Crossing: New Horizons, released in March 2020, became a massive hit, selling over 48 million units and becoming the second best-selling game on the Nintendo Switch. However, Nintendo was criticized for not providing significant DLC support for the game in the years following its launch. This new announcement suggests the company is looking to reinvigorate the franchise and provide players with a more robust and engaging island life experience.
