Microsoft Signals Studio Shutdown for Ninja Theory Amidst Failed Deals

Microsoft has signaled its intention to close Ninja Theory, the Cambridge-based studio responsible for the Hellblade series. A consultation process with employees has commenced, adhering to UK employment law, following the failure of two separate agreements intended to rescue the studio. Xbox Chief Content Officer Matt Booty confirmed the impending closure while also stating that the company continues to explore other avenues.

The situation intensified after Xbox CEO Asha Sharma's memo suggested potential layoffs and studio closures. Ninja Theory was identified as being on the chopping block in July, leading to fan confusion about how Microsoft could announce Senua in June and then propose shutting down the developer. Reports suggest Microsoft hoped the announcement of Senua would attract investor interest, a plan that has evidently failed.

The release of Senua is now uncertain, with its fate hinging on a last-minute deal. However, precedents like Double Fine and Compulsion Games achieving independence offer a glimmer of hope, as Microsoft has shown willingness to part with intellectual property to facilitate studio exits.

Ninja Theory's games have faced commercial struggles, prompting Microsoft to refocus on its major franchises like Minecraft and Halo to improve revenue and profitability for the Xbox business.
