Joe McGann, a prominent actor from the nineties best known for his role as Charlie Burrows in 'The Upper Hand' (1990-1996), has retired from acting to retrain as a psychotherapist. The 67-year-old now works in a frontline addiction rehabilitation facility in Liverpool.
McGann's career spanned numerous television roles, including appearances in 'Casualty', 'Doctors', and 'Hollyoaks', as well as more recent roles in 'Vera' and Netflix's 'Kaos'. He has also featured in his brothers' acclaimed series, 'Call the Midwife'.
He revealed his new profession on his Substack channel, describing himself as an actor, writer, and trainee psychotherapist. McGann shared that his work in addiction rehab made him acutely aware of the discrepancy between professed beliefs and actual behavior concerning addiction.
This career shift follows McGann's personal life changes, including his reported split from his wife Tamzin in January 2022 after 16 years of marriage. He has since reportedly found a new relationship with campaigner Frances Malloy.
