Executive producers Margaret Cho and Lilly Wachowski have concluded production on transgender comedian Nina Nguyen's first stand-up special, titled "Margaret Cho Presents Nina Nguyen: Dreams." Directed by Nicole Blaine, the special is a unique blend of a one-woman show and stand-up comedy.
Adapted from Nguyen's original play "Sleepover," the production aims to advocate for trans youth. It features Nguyen traveling back in time to share jokes with her younger, closeted self. Nguyen stated that the special provides the representation she didn't have as a trans child.
Margaret Cho, who signed on as an executive producer and presenter after Nguyen opened for her, described the special as "truly necessary and groundbreaking work" that "will save lives." Lilly Wachowski became an executive producer after finding Nguyen's crowdfunding campaign.
Filmed at The Crow, a comedy club in Santa Monica owned by Blaine, the special was set on a Y2K-themed stage. Additional executive producers include Nguyen, Blaine, and Caramel Velez. Erin Einstein Dale handled the production's legal representation. Nguyen began her stand-up career in Houston, Texas, before moving to Los Angeles.
