Leonard Nimoy, famed for his role as Spock, also ventured behind the camera. He directed an episode of the horror anthology series "Night Gallery," created by Rod Serling. This marked Nimoy's initial credited directorial work.
The episode, "Death on a Barge," is based on an Everil Worrell short story. It tells the tale of Hyacinth, a vampire isolated on a barge and unable to cross flowing water. Nimoy sought out the directing opportunity, impressing producer Jack Laird with his persistence.
Nimoy described the script as poetic and collaborated with cinematographer Gerald Finnerman. Finnerman had previously worked with Nimoy on the original "Star Trek." Though "Death on a Barge" was Nimoy's only "Night Gallery" directorial credit, he continued to direct other television episodes.
