Chuck Russell, the co-writer and director of the 1987 installment "Dream Warriors," believes that while Robert Englund will always be the definitive Freddy Krueger, actor Jim Carrey could potentially take on the role if the series explored a "bold new direction."
Englund, who originated the Freddy character in the original 1984 slasher film, recently acknowledged that he is now "too old and thick to play Freddy." The 78-year-old actor cited physical limitations, including a bad neck, back, and arthritis in his right wrist, making it difficult to perform the necessary fight scenes. However, Englund expressed openness to a cameo role, stating he would "love to" appear in a new "Elm Street" project.
Russell, who directed Carrey in the 1994 hit "The Mask," believes the comedic actor has the versatility to take on the iconic horror villain. "Jim, in my opinion, could almost do anything if he put his heart into it," Russell said. The director noted that for Carrey to consider the role, the franchise would need to pursue a "very meta" approach, similar to Wes Craven's 1994 film "New Nightmare."
