The film "Ngwato," set to premiere at the 8th Joburg Film Festival, tells the story of a young, gay Black South African man returning to his ancestral village. This journey is both a coming-out narrative and an exploration of a strained father-son relationship.
Directed by Magangwe Mahlase, "Ngwato" highlights the societal clashes and family tensions that arise when the son's identity is revealed to the villagers. This revelation is exploited by a tribal elder to challenge the father's leadership role, creating a central conflict.
Shot in Matibidi, Mpumalanga, the film was filmed over two weeks in February 2024. Mahlase emphasized the importance of casting local, Sepedi-speaking actors and crew, aiming to foster genuine representation and provide opportunities within the film industry.
The narrative also juxtaposes the fast-paced city life with the slower, reflective pace of village life. Intense emotional scenes, including a physical confrontation and a mother's plea to her husband, underscore the son's desire for paternal acceptance.
"Ngwato" concludes with a twist, departing from a simple "happily ever after." The film is a deeply personal reflection for Mahlase, drawing on his own experiences of seeking paternal connection and offering a message of perseverance to aspiring African filmmakers.
