A lawsuit has been filed in the U.S. alleging copyright infringement by K-pop group NewJeans concerning their 2024 song "How Sweet." The suit was brought by four songwriters who claim the hit track bears significant similarities to their demo, "One of a Kind."
According to the legal complaint, the plaintiffs submitted "One of a Kind" to NewJeans' label, ADOR, in January 2024. They were reportedly informed the song was not selected, but later identified what they allege is substantial overlap with "How Sweet," released in May 2024.
The lawsuit specifies that both works are in 4/4 meter and the key of B flat minor. It further claims a shared melodic sequence of approximately eight bars. The plaintiffs are seeking compensation for the alleged unauthorized use of their work.
This legal action emerges amid ongoing internal disputes within NewJeans and ADOR. Following a prior legal battle, some members have been working to reconcile with the label, though one member, Danielle, has been dropped from the group. Discussions are reportedly progressing positively for another member, Minji, regarding her potential return.
