Salman Khan's upcoming war drama, which draws inspiration from the Galwan Valley clash, has been retitled 'Maatrubhumi: May War Rest in Peace.' The film, previously known as 'Battle of Galwan,' is directed by Apoorva Lakhia and stars Salman Khan as Colonel Santosh Babu. The new title and poster were revealed on Monday, conveying the theme 'May War Rest in Peace.'
The narrative is based on the June 15, 2020 confrontation between Indian and Chinese troops in the Galwan Valley. This incident, marked by hand-to-hand combat, led to the deaths of 20 Indian soldiers. Salman Khan portrays Colonel Santosh Babu, who led the Indian forces during the clash. The film's cast also includes Chitrangda Singh, Abhilash Chaudhary, and Ankur Bhatia, with music by Himesh Reshammiya.
Even before its release, the film has encountered criticism from some Chinese quarters. Users on Weibo and Chinese state media have accused the movie of misrepresenting the Galwan Valley clash events and claiming the region belongs to China. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs has stated that such film-related matters are handled by relevant authorities and the MEA has no role in these ventures.
The Galwan Valley clash significantly impacted India-China relations, prompting India to ban over 200 Chinese mobile applications and impose stricter scrutiny on Chinese investments. Public calls for boycotting Chinese products also gained momentum.
