Indie Spirit Awards Honor Film Icon With New Eco-Vision Award

The Film Independent Spirit Awards have introduced a new accolade, the Robert Redford Environmental Vision Award, in partnership with The Redford Center. This award will celebrate a significant American narrative film or television work that addresses environmental concerns through creative and hopeful storytelling. It aims to honor the legacy of Robert Redford, a champion of independent filmmakers and environmental issues.

Eligible submissions must explore environmental topics, such as climate change solutions, Indigenous knowledge, or conservation efforts. The judging criteria will focus on unique vision, storytelling innovation, and provocative subject matter. The award prioritizes works that engage audiences emotionally and intellectually, inspiring action and a sense of possibility.

Submissions for the Spirit Awards open on August 18, 2026, with deliberations concluding in October 2026. The recipient of the Robert Redford Environmental Vision Award will be revealed in early December 2026, with the full list of winners announced at the live ceremony on March 6, 2027. Film Independent also uses the event as a fundraiser for its programs supporting diverse and visionary filmmakers.
