Powerhouse Parramatta is set to open its doors to the public on Saturday, November 7. Celebrated as a monumental cultural infrastructure project, it represents the most significant investment in the arts since the Sydney Opera House. The new museum, situated on the banks of the Parramatta River, boasts a construction price tag of $915 million.
This ambitious undertaking, which was first announced over a decade ago in 2015, will host a variety of exhibitions. Many of these will be offered free of charge to the public. The opening program includes five distinct exhibitions.
Among the featured exhibitions is "Task Eternal," which explores the history of human aviation and space exploration. This exhibit will include a historic Qantas aircraft and artifacts from the Apollo space mission. Another exhibition, "The Mall," delves into the cultural significance and evolution of shopping centres, with a focus on Western Sydney's pioneering role.
"The Mall" will showcase over 560 objects from the Powerhouse collection, supplemented by numerous loans and personal narratives. The exhibition highlights include contributions from architectural archives and iconic Australian brands. Local MP Donna Davis expressed anticipation for the exhibition, recalling personal memories of Parramatta's former shopping centre.
