The culinary world is abuzz as the 2026 James Beard Award semifinalists have been announced, with a strong showing from New Orleans. These nominations, often dubbed the "Oscars of the food world," have the power to elevate restaurants and chefs to national acclaim. Last year, New Orleans restaurants received 13 nominations, highlighting the city's vibrant food scene.
This year's semifinalists from New Orleans include Donald Link and Stephen Stryjewski for Outstanding Restaurateur, E.J. Lagasse for Emerging Chef, and Evviva and Saint Claire for Best New Restaurant. Bywater Bakery is recognized for Outstanding Bakery, and Braithe Gill of Brennan's is a semifinalist for Outstanding Professional in Beverage Service.
Additionally, the Best Chef: South category features New Orleans chefs Ana Castro (Acamaya), Serigne Mbaye (Dakar NOLA), and Charly Pierre (Fritai). Beyond the city, Wild Child Wines in Lafayette and Cory Bahr in Monroe also received nominations. Anonymous judges will now select the final nominees, who will be celebrated at a June ceremony in Chicago where the winners will be revealed.
