After an $82 million expansion, New York's New Museum has reopened its doors, bringing contemporary art back to the heart of Manhattan. The newly unveiled 60,000-square-foot building doubles the museum's previous footprint and will host groundbreaking exhibitions.
The museum launched its new wing with "New Humans: Memories of the Future," an exhibition examining what it means to be human in an increasingly technological world. This show contrasts modern pieces with historical classics, highlighting technology's profound impact on mankind.
Designed by Shohei Shigematsu and Rem Koolhaas with Cooper Robertson, the expansion features angular mesh architecture. The project, which faced several delays, ensures Manhattan's only contemporary art museum is future-proofed. A dedicated artist-in-residence studio is also a new addition.
"Our new 120,000-square-foot building on the Bowery signals our redoubled commitment to new art and new ideas," stated Lisa Phillips, director of the New Museum. The museum aims to be an evolving site for risk-taking and experimentation.
