A new 1.9-mile walking trail has opened in Distington, near Workington, following Stubskill Beck. This route is enhanced by five interactive oak sculptures crafted by artist Daniel Weatheritt, named 'Riveting Rivers.' These intricate artworks represent local wildlife and heritage.
Each sculpture invites interaction, featuring a cogwheel that visitors can turn to learn about different life cycle stages of depicted creatures. Weatheritt emphasized the importance of this interactivity, aiming for more than just visual appreciation. Inspiration for the sculptures came from a workshop with children from Distington Community School.
The West Cumbria Rivers Trust developed the trail, undertaking work such as rebuilding fences and constructing a boardwalk. This initiative is part of their 'Watery Walks' program, designed to promote engagement with local river environments and landscapes. The trust hopes the art will foster a deeper connection to the surrounding nature and community stories.
