16 May
Summary
- Five German directors formed a group for independent filmmaking.
- This initiative aims to counter rising production costs and studio conservatism.
- Netflix has pre-bought rights to the initial Dogma 25 films.

Five prominent German directors, Tom Tykwer, Kurdwin Ayub, İlker Çatak, Nora Fingscheidt, and Helene Hegemann, have united to launch a new independent film collective. This initiative, which mirrors the spirit of the original Dogma movement, aims to foster "free and unpredictable cinema." The creators stated that this venture arrives at a critical juncture for the film industry, characterized by escalating production expenses and a prevailing trend of studios prioritizing safety over innovation.
The new German Dogma movement is being established as a co-production between X Filme Creative Pool and Zentropa Germany. Key partners include X Verleih for German distribution and TrustNordisk for international sales, with ZDF and Arte as planned broadcasting partners. MOIN Film Fund is also confirmed as an initial regional funding body. The first feature film, "Mr Nawashi" by İlker Çatak, is slated for delivery in 2027.
Adding to the momentum, Netflix has pre-purchased the rights to the first five Dogma 25 films. This deal with Zentropa will see the films released in the Nordics after their theatrical runs, followed by airing on Danish broadcaster DR. This collaboration marks Netflix's first pre-buy with Zentropa, highlighting the streamer's interest in supporting auteur-driven brands within the European film landscape.
