A complete, unpublished manuscript by Theodor Geisel, known as Dr. Seuss, has been discovered in the Geisel Library archives at UC San Diego. Titled "Sing the 50 United States!," the manuscript was found amongst approximately 20,000 files.
Publishers from Penguin Random House and Dr. Seuss Enterprises found the manuscript last May, noting its completeness. The text required no alterations, with even Geisel's original punctuation and phrasing retained.
Illustrator Tom Brannon meticulously recreated Geisel's intended artwork. He carefully used only colors featured in other established Dr. Seuss works to ensure authenticity.
It is theorized that Geisel may have written "Sing the 50 United States!" after Hawaii became a state in 1959, potentially for "The Cat in the Hat Songbook." The book was published on June 2, 2026, marking an exceptionally fast turnaround time for a posthumous release.
This discovery highlights Geisel's serious approach to children's literature. The archives also contain other unfinished works, including lessons on telling time and spelling, suggesting more potential for future publications.
