Walt Disney Animation Studios is set to release a new animated short, "Lilo & Scratch," featuring the popular character Stitch. This short is designed to visually echo the original 2002 film's hand-drawn animation and watercolor background style, employing a mix of traditional and computer-generated techniques to achieve a seamless look. The short will debut in theaters on November 25, accompanying the release of Disney's new animated feature, "Hexed."
Directors Fawn Veerasunthorn and Malcon Pierce revealed that the team worked to meticulously replicate the original film's aesthetic. Modern technology was utilized to create digital assets that perfectly emulate the look of hand-drawn animation and watercolor art. Even distinct visual elements, like the interaction between a 3D Stitch and a 2D Scratch, were presented flawlessly.
The story of "Lilo & Scratch" picks up immediately after the events of the original film. It involves Lilo's new adopted cat, Scratch, who is also an alien and targets Pudge, the weather-controlling fish. Stitch is seen repeatedly attempting to protect Pudge from Scratch's laser-eyed attacks, leading to a chaotic kitchen confrontation.
Maia Kealoha, who voiced Lilo in the recent live-action adaptation, returns to lend her voice to the character in the short. The theatrical exhibition of "Hexed" on November 25 marks the only planned way for audiences to experience "Lilo & Scratch."
