Home Pianos Inspire Nocturnes Album

Ellis Ludwig-Leone's new album, 'Quiet Hours,' offers a collection of nine solo piano nocturnes, released on August 14, 2026. These pieces are deeply personal, with Ludwig-Leone composing each nocturne specifically for a different pianist friend, including Adam Tendler and Simone Dinnerstein.

The core concept of the album revolves around the idea of a 'home piano.' Pianists, often referred to as 'nomads,' were asked to record on an instrument that evoked a sense of familiarity and belonging. This approach allowed for a unique intimacy, with some pieces taking on a song-like or lullaby quality.

Ludwig-Leone, also known for his work with the indie-rock collective San Fermin, described his classical compositions as 'building a house.' For 'Quiet Hours,' he viewed writing for his pianist friends much like writing songs, allowing room for performer interpretation and a collaborative spirit. This led to pieces that, while formally complex, felt personal and inviting.

Several pianists shared their experiences, noting how Ludwig-Leone attuned the compositions to their individuality. Simone Dinnerstein described the nocturnes as "sort of odd" with moments of lyricism and unexpected quirks, reminiscent of Charles Ives. Adam Tendler found his piece intentionally "off," creating a dialogue between nostalgic and dissonant elements.

The concept of 'home' varied for each performer. For some, it was a childhood piano or an instrument inherited from a mentor, like Timo Andres's Bösendorfer or Dinnerstein's recording on her producer's Steinway. Aaron Diehl, a jazz pianist, recorded on his own home piano, a 1986 Steinway M, relating the album's title to enforced quiet hours in his apartment building.
