- Public broadcaster NPO cited societal division and discussion as reasons for withdrawal.
- Eurovision organizers expressed regret but respect for the Netherlands' decision.
The Netherlands has decided against participating in the 2027 Eurovision Song Contest, a reversal of a previously announced intention. The Dutch public broadcaster, NPO, stated that Israel's participation elicits significant reactions within society, leading to discussion and division. Consequently, NPO has opted to forgo participation next year.
NPO's media director, Jurre Bosman, explained that while discussions initially suggested sufficient support for returning, a suitable format could not be found. He emphasized that due to current sensitivities, taking a step back is necessary. Although Dutch fans may be disappointed, the contest will still be broadcast in the Netherlands.
Eurovision Song Contest director Martin Green expressed sorrow over the Netherlands' absence but understands and respects the decision. He acknowledged differing opinions on the contest globally and within countries. Green highlighted Eurovision's role in fostering unity through music and expressed hope for the Netherlands' return when the timing is right.
Several countries, including Iceland, Spain, and Ireland, boycotted the 2026 contest over Israel's actions in Gaza. Organizers have introduced changes, such as barring countries involved in armed conflicts from hosting and modifying voting procedures. Ireland will also not compete in 2027, and Spain's public broadcaster favors a boycott. The Czech broadcaster has withdrawn citing budget cuts.
