Netflix Unveils Biggest Polish Production: Disaster Mini-Series 'Heweliusz'

In November 2025, as Netflix celebrates its 10th year in Poland, the streaming giant has unveiled its most ambitious production from the Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) region to date - the disaster mini-series 'Heweliusz'. The show, estimated to be one of the biggest Polish TV productions ever, is based on the 1993 sinking of a Polish passenger ferry in the Baltic Sea, which resulted in the deaths of 55 people and is considered the deadliest peacetime maritime disaster involving a Polish ship.

Filmed over the course of 9 months across 70 locations in and outside of Poland, 'Heweliusz' features a cast of 120 actors, 3,000 extras, and a crew of around 140 people. The series is a co-production between Netflix and the creative team behind the streamer's previous Polish hit, 'High Water', which also dramatized a disaster event.

According to Łukasz Kłuskiewicz, who oversees Netflix's TV and movie operations in the CEE region, the company prioritized quality over speed in the making of 'Heweliusz', which blends genres like disaster, thriller, character drama, and family drama to provide a multi-layered exploration of the tragic event. Kłuskiewicz notes that the show's creators are "fascinated by cinema" and have crafted the series with "fantastic plot twists" that will keep viewers engaged.
