Summary
- Netflix has paused Denzel Washington's Hannibal film production.
- Budget concerns are the cause of the production halt.
- The film was set to shoot in Italy this summer.
Production on Denzel Washington's untitled historical epic war movie, centered on the Carthaginian general Hannibal, has been paused by Netflix. The decision stems from budget concerns, with producers and the studio actively seeking to resolve the issues and get the project back on track.
The film, directed by Antoine Fuqua, was scheduled to commence shooting in Italy this summer. It boasts a script by Oscar-winner John Logan and is set to focus on Hannibal's military campaigns against the Romans during the Second Punic War.
This project marks the sixth collaboration between Fuqua and Washington, who previously worked together on "The Equalizer 3." Washington, a decorated actor with two Oscar wins, will portray the famed military commander, considered one of history's greatest.
Fuqua's involvement follows his success with the biopic "Michael," which, despite critical reviews, achieved significant global box office success, grossing $850 million. The film's critical reception was mixed, with some reviewers citing concerns about the portrayal of Michael Jackson's legacy.
