Netflix is set to adapt the popular ice hockey novel 'Icebreaker' by Hannah Grace. This decision comes as streaming services see growing viewership for ice sports dramas. The book, which is the first in the Maple Hills series, gained significant traction on BookTok and has sold nearly 5 million copies globally since its 2022 publication, spending 70 weeks on The New York Times bestseller list.
This adaptation follows the recent success of other ice hockey series. 'Heated Rivalry,' based on Rachel Reid's novels, premiered in November on HBO Max and Crave and has already been renewed for a second season. Prime Video also saw success with 'Off Campus,' an adaptation of Elle Kennedy's book series, which was renewed for a second season in February.
Netflix itself has had success with adaptations like 'Bridgerton' and 'To All the Boys I've Loved Before.' The streamer also recently ventured into figure skating dramas with 'Finding Her Edge,' which was renewed for a second season shortly after its January premiere. Amanda Lasher and Jade Bartlett are attached to write and executive produce 'Icebreaker,' with Bartlett penning the pilot and Lasher serving as showrunner.
