A new half-hour romantic dramedy series, 'This Summer Will Be Different,' based on Sher Lee's YA novel 'Fake Dates and Mooncakes,' is in development at Netflix. Steven J. Kung is attached to write and executive produce the adaptation, which Gearshift Films is also developing.
The series will explore the story of Dylan Tang and Theo Somers, two teens of Chinese heritage who unexpectedly fall in love. It promises a queer coming-of-age narrative, delving into themes of identity, ambition, and belonging, inspired by the original novel.
Kung expressed his excitement for the project, aiming to celebrate immigrant communities and Chinese and Singaporean cuisine. Executive producer Borga Dorter highlighted the novel's blend of tenderness and humor, offering a safe space for LGBTQ+ youth. The adaptation will see Dylan and Theo move into early adulthood, expanding the emotional and cultural scope.
