Neon, an independent film distributor, has achieved significant success at the 98th Oscar ceremony, securing 18 nominations. This accomplishment places Neon among the top distributors, rivaling major Hollywood studios. The company's president, Tom Quinn, founded Neon in 2017 with a focus on engaging younger audiences and distributing foreign-language films, elevated genre titles, documentaries, and edgy dramas. This approach has led to critical acclaim and box office success, notably with 'Parasite,' which grossed $262 million globally. Neon has also secured distribution rights for the last six Cannes Film Festival Palme d'Or winners, including 'Anora' and 'Parasite.'
Neon's strategy effectively uses awards season as a marketing tool to boost theatrical revenues. Despite challenges in maintaining a long theatrical run, Neon's distribution chief, Elissa Federoff, successfully managed releases like 'Sentimental Value' and 'The Secret Agent,' noting that Premium VOD availability does not hinder theatrical performance. 'The Secret Agent' experienced a significant post-nomination box office increase, with 37 percent of its earnings occurring after its Oscar nominations. 'Sentimental Value' also saw a positive bump, with 17 percent of its gross coming in the post-nomination period.
Despite missing out on a best picture nomination, Neon's foreign-language thriller 'No Other Choice' garnered considerable attention and performed well at the U.S. box office. The company's provocative marketing campaign, including a billboard riffing on 'for your consideration,' highlighted its unique approach. Neon is also distributing four of the five films nominated for best international feature. Looking ahead, Neon is set to release 'The Christophers' on April 10, signaling continued growth and a dynamic presence in the film industry.
