Neil Patrick Harris, a Tony and Emmy winner, will embody the Devil in a new Broadway production of the 1955 musical "Damn Yankees." The show, centered on a baseball fan's Faustian bargain, will also feature Julianne Hough as Lola and Austin Scott as Joe Hardy. Previews commence on March 24, with the grand opening slated for April 20 at the Marquis Theater.
The production is a collaboration with Major League Baseball, leveraging its partnership and MLB Studios to ensure authenticity. Haley Swindal, George Steinbrenner's granddaughter, is a lead producer, bridging her family's baseball legacy with Broadway.
This revival, adapted by Will Power and Doug Wright, updates the original story. The setting shifts to Baltimore in 2000, and Joe Hardy, originally a white fan, is now Black and a Baltimore Orioles supporter. Lynn Ahrens has updated the lyrics to better reflect modern sensibilities.
"Damn Yankees" originally won the Tony for best musical in 1956 and was adapted into a film in 1958. The production is capitalized for $18.5 million, with a potential budget of up to $21.5 million.
