Last week, the ninth North East Students' Festival (NESt Fest) commenced at Talkatora Stadium, bringing the vibrant culture of India's Northeast to Delhi. The festival, themed 'The Sound of India's Yuva Shakti,' aimed to celebrate the region's rich cultural diversity through music, food, fashion, and dance.
Musical performances featured songs in various regional languages, with Sourabhee Debbarma and Felix Yumnam drawing significant applause. Debbarma shared songs from her Tiprasa community heritage alongside popular Hindi hits, while Yumnam's mellow and upbeat tunes resonated with the student audience. Delhi's Chief Minister, Rekha Gupta, addressed the gathering, commending the contributions of individuals from across India living and working in the city.
The festival also included a striking fashion show led by Meghalayan designer Rupert Wanlambok Lynrah, showcasing a blend of traditional and contemporary styles. A traditional Hojagiri dance from Tripura, where women performed balancing acts with clay pots, enthralled the attendees. For many, like nursing student Kimi from Mizoram, it was a memorable and joyful introduction to Northeast Indian culture in the capital.
