Local artist Sofia Barton is showcasing her "Blazing Trails" project at Gateshead's Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art. This exhibition shines a light on the often-overlooked community leaders of north-east England.
The artwork was initially commissioned in 2021 for the interiors of 46 new Tyne and Wear Metro Trains. Barton was one of four artists selected for this project.
"Blazing Trails" features notable historical figures such as suffragette Kathleen Brown and the founders of Newcastle's Chinatown, Koon Kiu Cheng and Peter Cheng. Barton drew inspiration from her background in Newcastle and her Punjabi heritage, incorporating vibrant colors and intricate details.
The exhibition, on view until September 27, extends its community focus by offering unique artworks from local charitable organizations for sale. Barton emphasizes the project's role in building community and fostering a sense of belonging.
