In a highly anticipated move, veteran actor Mark Harmon is set to reprise his iconic role as Leroy Jethro Gibbs in the upcoming crossover event between the hit CBS series NCIS and its prequel, NCIS: Origins. The 74-year-old actor, who portrayed Gibbs for 18 seasons before exiting the show in 2021, will make his first on-camera appearance since a cameo in the Origins debut in 2024.
The crossover, airing on Veterans Day, will see the younger Gibbs, played by Austin Stowell, and his team investigating the small-town death of a naval officer in the 1990s on NCIS: Origins. This decades-spanning mystery will unexpectedly be reopened in the present day on the main NCIS series. The special event will mark the first time the two shows have crossed over, with the air order switching for one night only.
While Harmon has stepped away from his starring role, he has remained involved with the franchise, serving as an executive producer on both shows and the narrator of each episode of Origins. The co-showrunners of the series, David J. North and Gina Lucita Monreal, have expressed their excitement to bring Harmon back, stating that they know how much fans have missed seeing the actor and have wondered what Gibbs is up to today.
