Nate Bargatze: Comedy's Clean King Hits Hollywood

Nate Bargatze, the highest-grossing comedian of 2025 due to his clean humor, is now aiming for cinematic success with 'The Breadwinner.' This film, starring Bargatze as a father managing his children after his wife's entrepreneurial success, seeks to revitalize the family-friendly, live-action comedy genre. Director Eric Appel notes the irony of making a "safe" movie feeling like a risk today.

'The Breadwinner' harkens back to an era of PG-rated comedies that entertained entire families. Producer Jeremy Latcham believes in a theatrical audience for such films, citing streaming success of classics like 'Big' and 'Home Alone.' He was inspired to create a movie he could share with his daughter, aligning with Bargatze's own desire to make this type of film.

While some semi-clean comedies have appeared recently, many have moved to streaming platforms, making their theatrical profitability uncertain. Daniel Loría of Boxoffice Pro explains that the loss of home video and cable revenue windows consolidates profit into the smaller streaming pie. Bargatze is introducing a "Nate Rate" discount to combat rising ticket prices and encourage family outings.

Despite negative early reviews and an expected modest opening weekend gross of up to $10 million, 'The Breadwinner' represents Bargatze's bet on broad appeal. It remains to be seen if he can achieve the star power of legends like Robin Williams or Tom Hanks. However, theater executives see potential, noting Bargatze's universal likeability and comedic talent.
