Nagpur Theatre Reimagined: Intimacy Over Spectacle

Summary
- Play staged in a real home, dissolving traditional theatre boundaries.
- Audience sits among actors, experiencing raw immediacy.
- Mahesh Elkunchwar's 'Sonata' explores complex relationships.

A recent theatre production in Nagpur reimagined the performance space by staging Mahesh Elkunchwar's play 'Sonata' within a residential living room. This unconventional approach offered a rare, close-quarters experience for the approximately eighty audience members who attended.
The performance stripped away theatrical elements like microphones and stage lights. Viewers were seated among the actors, effectively dissolving the traditional boundary between performer and audience and creating an atmosphere of intense intimacy.
'Sonata' delves into the lives of three educated, urban women, exploring themes of friendship, independence, loneliness, and vulnerability through their conversations. The play, which was also adapted into a film in 2017, relies on the actors' presence and vocal delivery to convey the story's emotional depth.
Director Onkar Ghare stated the intention was to merge the spaces of performers and spectators into a shared narrative. The production starred Radhika Joshi, Bianca Nazreth-Arya, and Sonal Trivedi-Malkan, offering Nagpur's theatre scene a refreshing departure from conventional auditorium shows.
