Summary
- NAACP Image Awards introduces a new category for gaming.
- HipHopGamer nominated for Outstanding Digital Content Creator.
- Category aims to reach and include minorities in gaming.

For the first time in its history, the NAACP Image Awards are expanding to include the gaming and tech industry. This significant development is marked by the introduction of the Outstanding Digital Content Creator - Gaming/Tech category, with five nominees vying for the honor. Gerard Williams, widely known as HipHopGamer, is one of the nominees.
The creation of this category reflects a conscious effort by the NAACP Image Awards to connect with a broader audience, particularly minority and Black individuals actively participating in the gaming world. As HipHopGamer stated, the goal is to "meet them where they are," acknowledging the substantial presence and influence of these communities within the gaming sphere.
HipHopGamer's journey into gaming began in his childhood in Brooklyn, inspired by his grandmother. Today, he is recognized for his contributions to gaming journalism and his community outreach initiatives. These include Playmakers, a program with Chase Bank focused on financial literacy through gaming in New York City schools, and a rehabilitation program for inmates at Rikers Island supported by Denzel Washington.
His involvement with gaming extends to being featured as a character in the "Mutant Football League 2" video game. Williams has previously experienced challenges within the gaming industry, citing instances of racism at events like E3 in 2008. He emphasizes a proactive approach, stating, "I don't complain, I create," highlighting his commitment to overcoming adversity by focusing on impactful action.
Looking ahead, Williams is set to host the Games Beat Summit at the GDC Festival of Gaming in March in San Francisco. His long-term aspirations include broader media representation, such as becoming a gaming anchor on "Good Morning America."
