The 417th Mysuru Dasara celebration has officially begun with its inauguration on Sunday atop Chamundi Hills. The auspicious ceremony was performed by Abhinava Gavisiddeshwara Swami of Gavi Mutt during Dhanur Lagna. This year marks a significant milestone with over 100 religious leaders representing different faiths present, signifying an expanded interfaith dimension to the ancient festival.
The 11-day event is set to culminate in the grand Dasara procession on Vijayadashami, October 21. This procession famously features a caparisoned elephant carrying the golden howdah, moving from Mysuru Palace to Banni Mantap grounds amidst a large gathering.
Preparations for the inauguration included arrangements for approximately 2,000 attendees on Chamundi Hills. Religious rituals commenced early, with Maha Rudrabhisheka and Panchabhisheka performed to Goddess Sri Chamundeshwari. The festival will observe pujas and rituals dedicated to the nine forms of Durga throughout the Navaratri period.
Furthermore, the Mysuru royal family is conducting its private Dasara celebrations, with Yaduveer Wadiyar symbolically ascending the throne for a Khas Durbar, echoing historical pre-Independence ceremonial practices.
