A new Indonesian film, 'My Mother,' is set to explore the complex emotional landscape of families separated by overseas labor. The narrative follows a widow's urgent quest to see her daughter, who has been sentenced to death in Saudi Arabia for the murder of her employer.
The daughter, however, remains estranged, unwilling to reconcile due to past betrayals. Director Eddie Cahyono drew inspiration from his own mother's departure for a better life, prompting research into migrant workers' dreams and the subsequent domestic fractures.
This project, presented at the JAFF Future Project, aims to secure industry partnerships for co-funding and distribution. It sheds light on the sacrifices and emotional toll borne by women migrant workers and their families left behind.
