Mumbai's Winter Warms Up with 'Nutcracker on Ice'!

Mumbai is set for a dramatic winter shift with the first-ever Indian performance of 'The Nutcracker on Ice,' brought by UK ice theatre pioneer Tony Mercer. Mercer's unique approach adapts grand ice spectacles for intimate theatre stages, promising a novel entertainment experience. His journey began with a desire to improve audience viewing after a disappointing ice show experience.

Mercer spent 21 years transitioning ice shows from large arenas to smaller theatre settings, developing a portable 12-meter ice-stage system. His background in theatre, including lighting design and stage management, informs his unique creation process. He emphasizes emoting and character development over traditional balletic forms, encouraging skaters to entertain audiences rather than focus on competitive scores.

The production features 23 Olympic, world, and national champion skaters, re-educating them to perform for an audience's engagement. Mercer's ingenuity extended to creating a portable ice-rink system, a significant engineering feat that took four years to perfect. Despite Mumbai's warm climate, Mercer assures that the indoor theatre environment will maintain controlled temperatures, ensuring a comfortable experience for all.
