Ten women from Mumbai's M East Ward, including areas like Deonar and Govandi, have emerged as co-directors of a 72-minute documentary titled "Mast Mahila Mandali." These women, who had no prior filmmaking experience, underwent an 18-month workshop to learn camera operation, editing, and directing.
The project began with the question, "Who were you before marriage? Who are you today?" Their film captures their experiences, ranging from domestic abuse and navigating daily struggles to practicing kabaddi, visiting the gym, and pursuing personal ambitions like further education or financial independence.
Initially, the women faced challenges such as negotiating personal differences and managing household responsibilities, often waking at 5 am for chores before workshops. Their guiding principle was authenticity: "We will show ourselves as we are."
Beyond the screen, the filmmaking process fostered significant personal growth. Participants reported increased confidence and a greater willingness to step outside their homes and engage in activities. The documentary is now slated for wider exhibition at film festivals and college campuses.
