Mumbai Opera House: 10 Years of Restoration, Musical Magic!

The Royal Opera House in Mumbai recently commemorated the 10th anniversary of its restoration. This significant milestone was marked by an immersive musical spectacle held on October 23. The acclaimed band Tabla and Sons headlined the event, delivering an electrifying performance that artfully fused Indian classical music, intricate percussion, and popular Bollywood melodies. The concert was further elevated by sophisticated projection mapping, which transformed the historic architecture into a dynamic visual backdrop for the music.

The band's performance was a tribute to legendary musicians AR Rahman and Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy. They played beloved songs such as Amaal Mallik's 'Mere Dholna' and the 'Dhurandhar theme' from Shashwat Sachdev, deeply engaging the audience. The ensemble comprised eight vocalists and eight tabla players, supported by a rich array of instruments including live drums, Puneri dhol, tasha, Punjabi dhol, sitar, and flute, creating a powerful rhythmic and melodic experience.

Asad Lalljee, Curator of the Royal Opera House, reflected on the venue's storied history. Inaugurated by King George V in 1911 and completed in 1916, it has long been a pivotal center for theatre, music, and cinema. The Opera House has hosted iconic artists like Gandharv, Dinanath Mangeshkar, and Prithviraj Kapoor, and notably, Lata Mangeshkar made her debut performance on its stage. The anniversary celebration underscored the venue's enduring cultural importance, bridging its historical legacy with contemporary artistic innovation.
