Shakespeare's Comedy Set in Post-War World

British writer-director Lakeem Rose is developing a feature film debut, a contemporary adaptation of William Shakespeare's "Much Ado About Nothing." The reimagined story is set in a world immediately following a modern-day war, focusing on four returning soldiers. They reconnect at a friend's home, where old conflicts resurface alongside new romantic interests and a scheme that threatens everyone involved.

The adaptation preserves Shakespeare's Early Modern English dialogue, presented with contemporary English subtitles. Visuals and setting are modernized for today's audience, with the inclusion of silent cinema-style sequences against a military backdrop. This unique approach aims to make Shakespeare accessible to a new generation.

The film is being produced by Canadian producers Plato Fountidakis and Paul Rapovski, alongside Hong Kong-based Mike Leeder. Fountidakis and Rapovski, with extensive backgrounds in genre film, are steering the project through their company Fast Motion Films. International sales and distribution will be handled by Clever Creature. Leeder brings his expertise in Asian and international genre titles from his base in Hong Kong.

Producer Plato Fountidakis emphasized the project's potential to introduce Shakespeare to new audiences through its distinctive perspective. The combination of Shakespearean language, contemporary genre filmmaking, and a post-conflict setting gives the project a fresh identity. The adaptation is currently in development with a targeted release in 2027.
